Early Festive Fayre for Successful Team
Wirral Council were thanked for their important backing for the grant funding which enabled a first phase of improvements to be completed at Clifford Grange in Tranmere, with tea and mince pies from Mary a tenant in one of the refurbished flats. Thanks were also extended to Mike Turner representing the contractor, Lovell who were responsible for delivering the physical improvements funded by the Homes and Communities Agency (HCA). It was a return visit for Wirral`s Head of Housing, Ian Platt, who had visited the scheme (originally built in 1979) prior to a bid being made to the HCA and who was instrumental in helping Wirral Methodist secure funding for the ?920,000 project. Refurbished flats have been extended and knocked together to give more spacious accommodation better suited for modern expectations. Mary had made a special effort to decorate her flat with Christmas decorations and made her visitors warmly welcome. She told them that she loved her `new` flat. Chief Executive, Alun Hughes said, "It is really pleasing that Ian and Lisa can have the opportunity to see for themselves, the difference that can be made to individual`s lives as a result of their support for our work". A decision is currently awaited from the HCA on whether support for a second phase of works to complete the remodelling of the accommodation is possible. Resident Receives Outstanding Achievement Award
Chris Murphy, 16, a resident of Cardigan Road, born with cerebral palsy has just passed 9 G.C.S.E.s and was recently presented with the Outstanding Achievement Award by Cerebra*. When Chris (pictured here on the left) was born, his mum was told that he would not live beyond his 3rd birthday. Despite the doctor`s prognosis that he had total brain damage and would never walk, he plays football every week and in August passed 9 GCSE`s. Even though he had major surgery during the academic year and was only able to attend school for the 6 months prior to sitting the exams. In October, this year, at the Cerebra Children`s Awards held at the Millennium Stadium, Cardiff, he received the Outstanding Achievement Award for his excellence in sport, courage, academic achievement and assistance he gives his mum. Chris, who lives with his mum and his twin brother Karl, who is more severely disabled with spastic-quadric plegic cerebral palsy helps his mum look after his brother, including helping Karl get dressed. Even though Chris only has the use of one hand. Chris has had to endure numerous operations during his life and was in a wheelchair for almost 2 years whilst his body was rebuilt to give him as much mobility as possible. It took a further 2 years of determination to get mobile and walking again. But despite Chris`s disability he plays loves taking part in sport and in particular football for Liverpool Football Club`s `Respect for all` Community team. Chris should be an inspiration to everyone. His mum, Christina Murphy, said "I would like to tell other parents who have had a child born with cerebral palsy and all the negatives that the doctors give us, to just look at Chris". She further added "My boys are indeed very special and I`m proud to be their mum". *Cerebra are a unique charity set up to help improve the lives of children with brain related conditions through researching, educating and directly supporting children and their carers.

Wirral Gets its First `Lifetime` Homes
Wirral Methodist Housing Association unveiled their latest innovative housing scheme at Bedford Road, Rock Ferry in Birkenhead with local MP, The Right Hon. Frank Field on hand to meet his new constituents and inspect the accommodation offered by the `Lifetimes Homes` standards, the first such scheme in Wirral. Tenants were presented at the same time with a `Welcome Pack` of household goods and groceries as a moving-in present by Gwyneth Moore widow of Malcolm Moore,a long serving Board Member of the Association in whose memory she had made a significant donation, which the Association decided should be used for this purpose. Chief Executive, Alun Hughes said that he made no apology for continuing to stress the need for families with disability not to be overlooked."The flexibility that `Lifetimes Homes` standard provides to help families lead fulfilled lives and the ease of their adaptability to meet future differing mobility needs is something of which we are particularly proud. The Association is once again at the forefront of drawing attention to what is possible" he said . The Right Hon. Frank Field was similarly impressed with what the Association had again achieved through its innovative approach, not just the quality of the internal spaces, but also the attention to external detailing intended to compliment and enhance the locality. He was particularly taken with the warmth of the homes achieved with minimal input through under-floor wet central heating supported by a construction giving a SAP value of 85 (B band rating).
