Free Fun Day At The Lauries
Young people in Birkenhead are invited to a Fun Day that the weather can`t spoil this Saturday (24 September 2011). The Lauries Centre in Birkenhead is throwing open its doors to give people the chance to have a go at something new and find out about many of the activities available on their doorstep. Several Council departments are coming together with community and voluntary groups to showcase local activities ranging from street dance to gardening, face painting to climbing walls and storytelling to DJ-ing. For anyone wanting to get involved in more energetic activities as the darker nights draw in there will be a chance to take part in Zumba and Tai Chi demonstrations and let off steam on a running and obstacle track. Wirral`s own 7 Waves Radio will be providing music throughout the day and their DJs will be encouraging visitors to have a go and maybe even think of enrolling on a DJ training course. The Fun Day will take place at the Lauries Centre in Birkenhead (opposite the site of the new ASDA superstore) from 11am – 3pm. As well as the activities there will be stalls, crafts, food and refreshments – and it`s all completely free! Cllr. Jean Stapleton, Cabinet Member for Community and Customer Engagement said: "We often hear that there`s not enough for young people to do, but quite often it`s just that people don`t know what`s available right on their own doorstep. There is a huge amount going on in sports centres and community buildings every day of the week, so the aim of the day is to bring some of those activity providers together under one roof and encourage young people to have a go and maybe even think about getting involved in some of the activities in future." Pauline Murphy from 7 Waves Radio said: "Although 7 Waves Radio is enjoyed by thousands of local people every day, it`s great to get out of the studio and really get local people involved. The radio industry has grown rapidly over the last few years and our training courses offer a fantastic start for anyone wanting a career in the business. She added, "Who knows, we might even help discover a budding Jo Whiley or Chris Moyles."

Afternoon Tea for the Town Centre Residents
Fantastic weather brought lots of residents along to our sparkle day and tea afternoon held in Florence Street, Birkenhead in September. WMHA Staff and members of the Town Centre Community Assocation and local residents enjoyed an afternoon of tea and cake to chat about neighbourhood issues in the area. A Free Skip was provided for the use of all residents to dispose of their unwanted items. Fly tipping and dog fouling were major issues raised by most residents and WMHA will be raising these issues at the next Safer Communities Initiative meeting.
