Death of Founder Member
One of the founding Members of Wirral Methodist Housing Association, Len Matthews passed away on Thursday 9 December aged 90 years. Len was one of a group of eight people at a Methodist Church meeting in 1964 who on hearing the plight of a family trying to hold itself together in the face of appalling housing conditions resolved to take positive, Christian caring action to meet the challenge and so the Birkenhead Methodist Housing Aid Society (as it was then called) was born. The farsightedness of the founders was three years before the ground breaking TV programme, "Cathy Come Home" which brought about a wider development of the social housing movement. Since that time, while staying close to its roots and focused upon meeting housing need of individuals, young, old families and the disabled, Wirral Methodist Housing Association (as it became retitled in 1975) now has over 700 homes, administered by a professional staff team under a predominantly Methodist Board of Management. One original founder Member remains, Beatrice Constance (Connie) Harvey age 99 who is no longer involved on a regular basis but likes to keep in touch with the Association`s progress. Office Staff at Wirral Methodist HA took part in a 5k Santa Dash around Liverpool City Centre. The aim was to raise money and help Liverpool beat the world record for the most Santa`s taking part in a Santa Dash. Unfortunately Liverpool were unable to beat the current record holders Las Vegas. With their record of over 8,000 Santas, but Liverpool still managed an impressive 6,500, despite the freezing weather. Staff are now already in training for next years dash and are hoping to encourage other members of staff to take part and beat their own record of six WMHA santa`s.

Refreshed Sheltered Block Celebration
Tenants, staff and Board Members of Wirral Methodist Housing Association joined in celebration for the completion of upgrading and improvement of its sheltered housing development at Clifford Grange, Tranmere. The 41 flat block, was considered innovative when it was built in 1980 at a cost of just over £1/2m, but with an increase in people`s wealth and expectations, the accommodation had become dated and too small to meet the needs of the elderly today. An imaginative redesign by architects Ainsley Gommon has seen sympathetic extensions enabling 2 into 1 and 3 into 2 conversions, improving the space standards of the flats as well as providing more accommodation for couples. The total project costs on the remodelling which was carried out in two phases with the residents in occupation throughout, amounted to £1.8m to over 3 times the original build cost of 30 years ago. The project was assisted with a £1.5m grant from the Homes & Communities Agency. Chairman Mike Howlett spoke of his personal recollections of Clifford Tristram, a founder Member of the Association in 1964 after whom the scheme was named. He would be pleased to see that the accommodation still provided a home and community that was appreciated. Chief Executive Alun Hughes thanked the contractors for their hard work, as well as the residents for their patience, throughout the 18 month contract period.
