Annual Children`s Summer Art Exhibition “Every Picture Tells a Story”
A collaboration which began over 10 years ago between Wirral Methodist Housing Association and Friends of the Williamson enabled over 40 young people to spend a very creative summer. The theme of this year`s summer Art Project held at the Williamson Art Gallery was "Every Picture Tells a Story". The theme reflects that adopted by Wirral Methodist for its Annual Report and Annual General Meeting. This year for the first time, the Association secured a grant from the Arts Council to take elements of the Summer Arts Project out on the road into the neighbourhoods of Wirral, as a taster session for children and residents who might not otherwise have engaged with the event in the past. A day was set aside for each of the communities of Central Birkenhead (in two locations), Rock Ferry, Woodchurch and Seacombe to come down to the gazebos set up in their midst and participate in a range of arts and crafts workshops with the artists including, for the first time, storytelling. The children were then encouraged to come down to the regular sessions that were to follow at the Williamson Art Gallery for the rest of the summer holiday period. The Mayor of Wirral Councillor Moira McLaughlin who opened the exhibition, complimented the organisers on the initiative and the children on their fine work, before viewing the work herself and meeting the children. Wirral Methodist Housing Association is a charitable organisation which since 1964 has provided homes for those in need on Wirral. They have an interest in seeking to create attractive places in which their tenants may live and to this end have supported for many years, activities in the community, particularly a regular summer collaboration with the Williamson Art Gallery as a meaningful outlet for local children.
