Refreshed Sheltered Block Celebration
Tenants, staff and Board Members of Wirral Methodist Housing Association joined in celebration for the completion of upgrading and improvement of its sheltered housing development at Clifford Grange, Tranmere. The 41 flat block, was considered innovative when it was built in 1980 at a cost of just over £1/2m, but with an increase in people`s wealth and expectations, the accommodation had become dated and too small to meet the needs of the elderly today. An imaginative redesign by architects Ainsley Gommon has seen sympathetic extensions enabling 2 into 1 and 3 into 2 conversions, improving the space standards of the flats as well as providing more accommodation for couples. The total project costs on the remodelling which was carried out in two phases with the residents in occupation throughout, amounted to £1.8m to over 3 times the original build cost of 30 years ago. The project was assisted with a £1.5m grant from the Homes & Communities Agency. Chairman Mike Howlett spoke of his personal recollections of Clifford Tristram, a founder Member of the Association in 1964 after whom the scheme was named. He would be pleased to see that the accommodation still provided a home and community that was appreciated. Chief Executive Alun Hughes thanked the contractors for their hard work, as well as the residents for their patience, throughout the 18 month contract period.
