Translation Policy

Wirral Methodist is committed to ensuring equality of access to its services, both for tenants and applicants for its housing.  It also wishes to ensure that its tenants are provided with sufficient information for them to maximise the benefits from this service.  For people whose first language is not English, or who need help to understand written information provided to them, the Association is prepared to help them overcome these barriers by:

  • Being patient and sympathetic to their needs
  • Offering a translation service into the following languages for any of its publications:
    • Arabic
    • Bengali
    • Chinese
    • Gujarati
    • Hindi
    • Urdu
  • Making publication content available in the following formats:
    • Braille
    • Large Print
    • Audio Tape

The Association intends to demonstrate this commitment by:

  • Publicising that documents can be translated
  • Producing a card for tenants to use to explain their translation needs to Association staff and representatives (eg: contractors)
  • Working with the Wirral Multicultural Centre and others to provide advice in appropriate languages and/or translations of published material relevant to the work of the Association

In the event of requests for material to be translated, the appropriate Line Manager will need to consider how best, within the spirit of this Policy, to ensure that the content of the correspondence concerned is conveyed.

This may be done in a variety of ways including:

  • Asking staff with particular individual language skills for assistance
  • Referral to other agencies such as ethnic support groups, Wirral Multicultural Centre, Liverpool Language Line or relatives
  • Redirecting applicants in Wirral to Wirral Homes (Choice Based Lettings Agency).
  • Direct translation of material either:
    • Through the services of Wirral Multicultural Centre who provide a translation of text (or similar)
    • Telephone helpline offered by Liverpool Language Line
    • With the assistance of the local representatives of the Royal National Institute of the Blind (RNIB)

Where a request is received for a translation of a document of legal significance (other than a tenancy agreement) pertaining to Housing Management matters, it is normally the case that this be sent for formal translation.

In other situations, particularly where the document is long it may be more appropriate to find other cost effective outcomes.  This may include preparing a précis of such a document in order to establish the necessity for the whole document to be translated.  An example might be where the content of a TOPICS Newsletter is reduced to a single page of salient points which can then be translated to give a flavour of the publication whilst being taken in hand with other forms of communication as outlined above.
